What is Microsoft Teams Calling?

Microsoft Teams Calling is the capability within Microsoft Teams that lets users make and receive traditional phone calls (PSTN) directly from the Teams app or connected devices. To enable this, Teams integrates with PSTN services, either through Microsoft Calling Plans, Operator Connect, or Direct Routing.

With Teams Calling, your Teams users can:

  • Call landlines and mobiles via PSTN
  • Answer calls across devices (desktop, mobile, desk phone)
  • Use Teams voicemail, call routing, call queues and auto attendants

  • Keep voice services integrated with collaboration and presence features

How Callroute Integrates with Microsoft Teams Calling

Callroute enhances Microsoft Teams Calling by acting as a cloud voice routing platform that connects your telephone infrastructure to Teams, letting you choose carriers and telephony equipment freely, without being locked to Microsoft’s own calling plans.

How Callroute Compares against other platforms

Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams enables external PSTN calling from Microsoft Teams — users can place and receive regular calls directly from the platform.

Direct Routing is an alternative to Microsoft Calling plans and Operator Connect and has been extensively adopted due to it being the most flexible way of connecting the PSTN to Microsoft Teams.
